* Editing is the preparation of a manuscript (journal article, book chapter, or full-length book of text) for submission and/or publication by clarifying meaning, eliminating jargon, polishing language-use for grammar, spelling, punctuation and style; checking for the consistency of facts; inserting appropriate headings/sub-headings where needed, as well as the placement of artwork; editing tables, figures, and lists; and ensuring that references in the text are correctly cited in the bibliography.

**Substantive editing is the preparation of a manuscript dealing with all-encompassing issues – clarifying or reorganising content, structure and style, involving no only extensive copy-editing, but also major rewriting.
